Water Training @Hartmoor
INTRODUCTION TO working in WATER
Ideally before attending a water training day, your dog will be comfortable and confident in water and have a good basic sit/stay/stop/delivery to hand.
If required, we can arrange introduction to water sessions where we will carefully expose your dog to a variety of aquatic environments, gradually getting your dog at ease in water and confidently entering water.
This is usually done in a 'no training - training' way to provide a no stress, more pleasant experience for your dog.
Set Up For Success
As with all of our training, beginning a new training element in an environment with the least amount of distractions as possible is of paramount importance.
We want our dogs to learn and progress so why make it difficult for them?
We use venues with no resident waterfowl to limit distraction levels and overexcitement.
SAFETY FIRST - ALWAYS
Water can be a challenging and dangerous environment to deploy a gundog into. There can be sub-surface structures, obstacles and currents.
Before entering your dog into moving water, your dog needs to be confident and a very strong swimmer.
Regardless of how strong and confident you feel your dog is, keep well away from fast moving, coloured water.
No dead pheasant is worth a much loved, highly trained, solid, working dog's life.
